What to Expect During Your Next Facility Environmental Test – 5 Steps

Between the arrival of the testing crew and the presence of state regulators, there are many steps involved in a successful environmental test.

An environmental test generally consists of five main steps:

1. Pre-Test Site Setup

Your facility’s environmental test begins long before the first probe enters a stack. First, the testing crew sends a team to stage the site and prepare for the tests. This involves setting up specialized mobile laboratory equipment and heated sample lines.

These crews will need access to your facility’s testing ports, as well as a stable power source. They’ll also calibrate and check the functionality of all their instruments using EPA-certified gases.

These initial tests ensure there are no leaks and verifies that the baseline data is 100% accurate before the official test starts.

2. Formal Testing

Once the equipment is calibrated, the official testing will begin. Most EPA and state permits require three separate tests for each unit, with each test lasting between 20 and 60 minutes. The exact amount of time depends on the specific pollutant being measured.

During these runs, your equipment must be operating at a level that represents your peak daily load.

The technicians will analyze the data in real-time, looking for steady-state conditions that show you’re complying with regulations.

3. On-Site Regulators

Aside from the testing crew, a representative from your state’s environmental agency will likely be on-site to witness the test.

These regulators are there to make sure the test is conducted according to the protocol that the testing team submitted to them earlier. They’ll check various aspects of the testing team’s setup, including gas cylinders and probe location. They’ll also look at copies of the raw data.

Handling the requests of the regulators is one reason why it’s important to work with an experienced team like Impact C&T. Our technicians act as your liaison between you and the agency observers.

We provide them with all necessary documentation to prove our testing is professional and compliant.

4. Data Processing

Proving the emissions numbers are within guidelines is only half the battle. Regulatory agencies also need to know what the engine was doing while those numbers were recorded.

The technicians will need to gather additional data to support the emissions test. This includes your facility’s process data on fuel flow, engine load, catalyst temperatures, and pressure drops.

This data provides crucial context for the emissions. If the testing data shows low emissions but your process data is missing or incorrect, the test results could be invalidated. The technicians take both of these data sets to provide a complete picture in their final report.

5. Final Reporting

Before the technicians leave your facility, they’ll give you a preliminary briefing on what you can expect. Then, once all the testing equipment is packed up, they’ll perform additional analysis at a lab.

Once all the necessary data is gathered, they’ll create a final report. Usually, you’ll receive this report a few weeks after testing. It serves as a legal record and includes all raw data, calibration logs, and final emissions calculations.

You or the agency will submit this report to the regulatory agency to maintain your permit to operate and prove your facility’s compliance.
