Understanding the Methods Behind Professional Stack Testing

Not sure how stack testing works? Your facility’s stacks aren’t just pipes for releasing exhaust. Instead, they are sources of critical data points. Analyzing this data can reveal whether your business is in compliance with local regulations.

Stack testing, also known as source sampling, is the process of measuring specific pollutants in your facility’s exhaust.

At Impact Compliance & Testing, we provide professional stack testing for businesses across the Midwest. Contact us today for more information on our services.

Understanding the Methods Behind Professional Stack Testing

Stack testing measures specific particulate matter being released into the atmosphere, including nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Based on the samples collected, you may need to take certain steps to stay in compliance with local or federal regulations.

The key method behind stack testing is isokinetic sampling. This process is used to measure air while it’s moving.

Ordinarily, measuring air while it’s moving is extremely difficult. If you pull the sample too fast or too slow, it can give you inaccurate readings. Depending on the speed, larger particles may be under or over-counted due to inertia.

With isokinetic sampling, the speed of the air as it enters the sampling nozzle is designed to match the speed of the air while it’s in the stack itself.

This ensures that every particle can be accurately counted within a single sample. At Impact Compliance & Testing, we use high-precision probes and digital manometers to maintain a balanced sample in real time. That way, you can be confident the data reflects your actual emissions.

EPA Reference Methods

Stack testing isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. Instead, the approach will vary from facility to facility and location to location.

When it comes to different pollutants, it can help to understand the Reference Methods created by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These methods are designed so that data collected for one business in one state is just as accurate as data collected for a different business across the country.

Some of the most common methods used are:

  • EPA Method 5: Used to measure solid bypass, including soot and fly ash. It involves collecting a gas sample, recording its weight, and then heating it in a temperature-controlled oven. The difference between the pre-test and post-test weight reveals how many milligrams of particulate matter was in the sample.
  • EPA Method 7E: Provides continuous monitoring and real-time data of a stack’s output, using instrumental analyzers. Reveals spikes in emissions that manual sampling can miss.
  • EPA Method 25A: Works best for measuring volatile organic compounds, and is the standard for measuring the potential of your facility’s exhaust to create smog. Uses an analyzer to measure the electrical current created by ions when gas from the stack is heated by a flame.

What is the Reporting Process?

Once all the data is collected, it’s sent to an accredited laboratory for analysis. You’ll receive a professional, in-depth stack testing report. It will include raw data, calibration logs, and a comparison of your test results against your permitted emission limits.

At Impact Compliance & Testing, we organize these reports so they’re audit-ready. This makes it easy for state and federal agencies to verify your facility’s compliance.
